This 100 LED on-camera ring light has a wide range of uses. It can be mounted around the lens as a continuous light for video as well as a flash. In this mode it produces even illumination around the subject, so no harsh shadows are cast. This is perfect for macro work, or to create beautiful even skin tones when filming reasonably close up to human subjects. For a slightly different look, you can also switch the light to illuminate on just the left or right side. This has the effect of increasing directional shadows for slightly more depth in the image.
Another benefit of using a ring light to film or photograph people is its application as a catch light to create beautiful “halo” reflections in the eyes, giving your subject a strong sense of vibrancy and vitality.
The light comes with a set of 8 adaptor rings to fit almost any modern lens. The rings screw into the filter thread on your lens, and the light can then clip onto this ring. The supplied adaptor rings cover all of the standard filter thread sizes: 49mm, 52mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm and 77mm.
As an alternative to mounting around the lens, you can also clip this light to its hot shoe mounted control/battery box. When used in this way it behaves similarly to a standard small on camera LED light.
The light has can be set to ¼, ½ or full power in continuous mode. If using as a flash, the unit is able to output short flash bursts at approximately double the full power of continuous mode. In flash mode, the unit can be triggered automatically through the hotshoe and will provide a brief continuous modelling light when the shutter release button is half pressed to help simulate how the flash light will fall.
The ring light is powered on a set of 2 x AA batteries (sold separately). This is Aputure’s newest high CRI variation, with an astonishing 95CRI. High CRI lights reproduce colour more accurately, vibrantly and naturally and avoid unwanted colour spikes (typically green spikes in LED), that are commonly found in lower CRI lights.
This model is designed for Nikon cameras, although we also sell a version for Canon. If used on a non-Nikon camera, it will still function as a light, but will not be triggered in flash mode through the hotshoe, and may not mount properly on the hotshoe.
